Youth Programs & Rates

Competitive fencing can start as early as 7 years old.  We have a “pre-fencing” class for 4-6 year olds. Adult recreational fencing. Open fencing for all ages and levels. We teach foil, saber and epee.

Annual club membership runs from August 01-July 31 each year. Annual membership fee is  $125/year or $75 if you join after January 1st. Sibling discount for group classes (minimum 2 x week): $50 for each additional sibling.

Length of all below programs depends on the following factors: age of fencer, speed of skill acquisition, attendance record, number of private lessons, amount of home practice.

PROGRAMS

Three Musketeers

Physical development program for kids 4-6 years old in a group setting; 1 time a week (50 min) –  $120/month. The program focuses on increasing attention span and improving balance and eye-hand coordination. The kids get introduced to various movements associated with fencing. introduction to noodles and plastic sword fencing.

Beginner Fencing

$120/month – 1 class/ week (75 min)  

$195/month – 2 classes/ week (75 min) + Open Bouting Session on Fridays (2.5 hrs), duration 8-15 months  

Students need to have completed the Beginner program and take a minimum of 15 private lessons to pass this level.

The program puts a strong emphasis on footwork, eye-hand coordination. The students continue studying the general rules of fencing and begin fencing in pairs. This class introduces the students to fencing tactics and exercises in distance/timing/execution and provides intro to electrical fencing. 

The students are encouraged to sign up for non-competitive USFA membership and participate in non-sanctioned tournaments. 

Intermediate Foil/Saber 

$250/mo – 2 classes/ week (120 min) + Open Bouting Session on Fridays (2.5 hrs), duration 10-15 months.

$325/mo – 3 classes/ week (120 min) + Open Bouting Session on Fridays (2.5 hrs), duration 8-12 months.

Prerequisite: Beginner Fencing Program.

The Intermediate program concentrates on distance, timing and execution. The students continue perfecting footwork with greater emphasis on endurance/speed/strength and on exercising in pairs. The bouting practice is primarily electrical. The students continue studying the evolution of fencing tactics including feints, disengages, parries and counterattacks. The class is in foil and saber. 

As the students become tournament ready they are encouraged to get competitive USFA membership to participate in local tournaments and local regional one

Advanced Foil/Saber

$425/mo – 4 classes/week (80 min) + Open Bouting Session, duration 12-18 months.

Prerequisite: Intermediate Fencing Program.

The program includes introduction to complicated and evasive footwork with heavier emphasis on endurance, speed and strength as well as advanced bouting 

The students continue studying the advanced bouting technique for further preparation to competitions. The students will acquire the mastery of distance – choosing fencer specific comfortable distance tactics; the mastery of timing actions; and the mastery of execution of actions – a never ending process. The students will work in the weapon their choice – saber/epee/foil.

The class also includes after tournament analysis form parent/coach videos, the training on how to prepare/repair own equipment and puts the heavy emphasis on non-fencing activity to improve on-strip performance. 

As students progress they start participating in all regional youth and super-youth competitions. And at the coach’s discretion may participate with the partner club in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Competitive and beyond: $475/month – 5 classes (90 min) plus unlimited open fencing per week

Prerequisite: Advanced Fencing Program. Students need to take a minimum of 3 private lessons a week.

The students continue to master the distance/timing/execution actions and are encouraged to train for endurance/speed/strength in 1 on 1 classes, as well as  to request topics to work on in class and private lessons. The students are also encouraged to set up stations at home to practice target and footwork and hand coordination. At this point the students are capable of repairing their own equipment.

The program includes a breakdown of international competition videos, as well as constant taking videos and performans breakdown of each fencer. The fencers are invited to sit on all CFA team events and to participate in the Regional/National International events depending on level of preparation including the training camps with the partner club in St. Petersburg, Russia.

  • Friday Open Bouting (kids/adults) – $10/session (members), $20/session (non-members)
  • Sibling discount: $50 off monthly group classes for each additional sibling (minimum 2 classes/week)
Strength, Conditioning, Agility and Balance Class

CFA offers fencing related boxing class. It specifically relates to improving as a fencer. Not to mention, this class will probably make you a better business person, parent. The class is once a week (60 min) – $120/mo.

Chess and Checkers Class

Fencing is often called physical chess because of the many tactical decisions a fencer needs to make in a split second. Cleveland Fencing Academy teamed up with a well known in the Cleveland Area chess educator Progress With Chess to offer its students chess classes that would set them up for success not only in fencing but in the many aspects of their daily lives. The Chess and Checkers class is offered two days per week as a 60 min class. Prices are $90 (one day a week) and $150 (twice a week). Please see Class Schedule here
