College Admission
Attending any college nowadays can be prohibitively expensive. And even worse, getting accepted into your top choice may be unreachable. What better way to poke two opponents with one thrust than with a weapon from Cleveland Fencing Academy? Boys and Girls Fencing are the #1 athletic route of getting into the college of your dreams, possibly for free, and competing and being trained in the sport you love so much at the college’s expense!
There are 46 NCAA fencing programs, all of which look favorably on high school fencers, recruit high school fencers, admit high school fencers because of fencing, and provide scholarships to admitted students. Please see the fencing scholarship statistics for the list of NCAA schools with fencing programs and the respective scholarship figures.
Many boys and girls grow up dreaming of playing sports in college and beyond. But according to the NCAA statistics of the nearly 8 million students currently participating in high school athletics in the United States, only 495,000 of them will compete at NCAA schools. This means that on average only 6.2% of high school athletes go on to competing in college.
Now let’s look into the high school to college participation conversion rate for fencing compared to some of the most popular high school sports according to the 2017-2018 High School Athletics Participation Survey and the NCAA statistics:
Sport | Boys | Girls | ||||
High School | High School | College | Conversion Rate | High School | College | Conversion Rate |
Fencing | 2,428 | 675 | 27.8% | 2,085 | 706 | 33.8% |
Football | 1,036,842 | 73,557 | 7.1% | – | – | – |
Basketball | 551,373 | 18,816 | 3.4% | 412,407 | 16,614 | 4% |
Soccer | 456,362 | 25,072 | 5.5% | 390,482 | 27,811 | 7.1% |
Tennis | 158,151 | 7,838 | 4.9% | 190,768 | 8,608 | 4.5% |
So, what exactly these numbers mean? They mean that if a child is fencing in high school, then there is about a 1 in 3 chance of him/her being accepted to the best colleges in the US and staying in the sport. So all of the time, effort, and money that parents put into this activity has a good chance in resulting in a dream college acceptance / college scholarship / elite sport for college and life. And in college, fencing success is measured by both personal and team results. Take it from me, it is a WONDERFUL and life changing experience for the lucky ones who get in! By comparison if a child (boy or girl) is on a high school soccer team, that chance is more like 1 in 16. Tennis is about 1 in 20 and basketball in 1 in 27! Those are great sports, but the competition is fierce hence the conversion rate is low.
The experiences of college athletics and the life lessons the students learn along the way will help them as they pursue careers in other fields. Education is a vital part of the college athletics experience, and student-athletes graduate at higher rates than their peers in the student body.
