How To Start
What do you need to start fencing?!
Really nothing. That is all you need. Nothing. Well, except a pair of sweats and some Nike’s. You see, the essence of fencing is in the footwork and not the bladework. At least for the first little while.
Presently, our kids Beginner Program starts with 2 after school group classes per week. Your choice of days. Beginners class begins with some conditioning and stretching, and after that we work on footwork, eye-hand coordination (lots of fun and creative activities), balance, and motion. We try to end class with a group fencing event with the kids as head and hand judges, a scrimmage game of soccer, or basketball so our class gels as a group.
Our adults program is a bit different. We start off with 4 private lessons which need to be scheduled over no more than a month. Private lessons are preceded by conditioning and stretching. Private lessons are a more intense version of a group lesson to help us determine how quickly we can get the adult into an active adults beginners group or intermediate kids program (depending which is best for fencers schedule and where space is available).
And once we have this down, then we add the blade to the equation. Generally, we start with the foil weapon and later let the fencer (with the coach’s guidance) choose the blade they want to specialize in. Again, our club has all the necessary equipment to get our fencers bouting and starting to get them ready for competition.
Nobody has the wrong body type or personality for fencing. The beautiful thing about our sport is that big and small are as beautiful as tall and short. Lean has its advantages vs. bulk and vice versa. And short has its advantages vs. tall, and vice versa. Intense, laid back, competitive, whatever your personality, one of our weapons has its name on it for you.
The advantage of CFA is that we have a large number of beginner and intermediate fencers. And our coach to student ratio is very favorable to plenty of attention for each fencer during class. We presently have 3 coaches with slightly different styles and training methods, so fencers can get a very 3 dimensional understanding of their personal strengths and weaknesses.
